GUIDELINES
TEAMS
Teams must consist of 3 or 4 junior or senior accounting majors from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. There is no limit on the number of teams per university. However, if teams register and do not attend we would ask for cancellation no later than January 19, 2009 at 5 pm.
PRIZES
Prizes are:
$3000 for first place
$2000 for second place
$1000 for third place
All Prizes are being provided by Berntson Porter & Company, PLLC, Certified Public Accountants and Consultants, of Bellevue, Washington.
Prize money will be mailed to students within 2 weeks of the competition. An IRS Form 1099 will be issued.

WRITTEN COMPETITION – Day 1: January 22, 2009, 2:30 - 6:30, Balmer Commons
The Written Competition is the preliminary competition. The 3 winning teams from that competition will compete for the cash prizes in the Final.
Competitors will be provided with a case containing information about a family with a sole proprietorship and other investments. Competitors will then be required to define Gross Income, Adjusted Gross Income and tax liability of the family, including components of each. In addition, competitors will be expected to address items that are not included in Gross Income, Adjusted Gross Income and tax liability.
MATERIALS ALLOWED IN WRITTEN COMPETITION
Competitors may bring only writing utensils, calculators and their individual tax textbooks to the competition. Each team may have one textbook per person, but all textbooks must be identical. No other technical help is allowed.
Competitors will be provided with paper to use to prepare answers. No other paper may be used.
Competitors may NOT use laptops or other internet connection on this portion of the competition

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION COMPETITION FOR FINALISTS– Day 2: January 23, 2009, staggered starts beginning at 8:30 am, Balmer 411
The Power Point Presentation Competition is the final competition. The 3 teams with the highest scores in the written competition will be the finalists. The finalist teams will be given additional facts about the family involved in the written competition. Each team will then be required to prepare a power point presentation making and explaining a tax planning recommendation to the couple. The recommendation will be based on investment opportunities available to them which are defined by the case facts. Each team will have its own office in which to prepare in Foster Library in the School of Business. Each team will have 3 ½ hours in which to prepare.
Students will have 35 minutes to present the case to the clients and answer the clients’ questions. Judges will be partners from various accounting firms.
MATERIALS ALLOWED FOR FINAL POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
Teams may provide their own laptops for this portion of the competition. Please make sure that the laptop is a PC and has Office 2000, 2003, XP or 2007. If teams do not bring a laptop, one will be provided for each team. Whether a team is using its own laptop or a UW laptop, the team is expected to bring a USB flash drive. This USB flash drive will be used with UW computers or team computers and in case there is any laptop failure or incompatibility with the projector. Teams may also have all materials allowed in the written competition.

Confirmation of receipt of your registration will be sent within 2 days of receipt. If you do not have a team, you will be placed into a team.

DIRECTIONS & PARKING
If you are planning on parking on Campus, you must stop at a gatehouse and buy a parking permit for $11.00 to park on upper campus or you may park in a Self-Serve Parking Lot on Montlake for $5.00. For specific parking information, please see:

From I-5
- Take the NE 45th St - University Exit.
- Go east on NE 45th. Cross University Way NE.
- Go two more blocks , turn right on 17th Ave. NE and enter campus.
- Stop at the gatehouse and get directions and a map. Purchase a campus parking permit. Request disability parking if needed. (Parking permits are required 6:00 am - 9:00 pm weekdays, 7:00 am - noon Saturday)
- Go past the gatehouse and make the first left on to E. Stevens Way.
- Stay on E. Stevens Way as it loops down toward the lake.
- At the stop sign, cross it staying on E. Stevens Way.
- The third building on the left is The University of Washington Club.
- There is a sign in front that says The University of Washington Club.

Parking: Stay on E. Stevens Way as it loops down toward the lake. When you come to a stop sign, turn left. Go to the next stop sign and make a right turn onto Mason Road. Parking will be on your right. Take the escalator up to Stevens Way. You must purchase and properly display a UW parking permit. The University of Washington Club is one building down on your left. Directions to Balmer Commons
- Using directions provided above, enter the university at the main gate at 17th Ave NE and NE 45th St
- Stop at the Gatehouse and get directions and a map. Purchase a campus parking permit. Request disability parking if needed. Ask for parking near Balmer Hall.
- (Parking permits are required 6:00 am - 9:00 pm weekdays
- Go past the gatehouse and make the first left on to E. Stevens Way.
- Stay on E. Stevens Way as it curves right. Balmer is on the right inside corner of the right curve.
- Balmer Commons is on the ground floor of Balmer Hall and is clearly marked.
