Over 60 students, or nearly one-third of BAP’s members, attended iExpress’s widely popular and equally informative Interview and Resume workshops on January 10th and 17th. Roughly 50 people attended each event, which featured a mix of juniors and seniors.
The interview workshop showcased Andy Baker (Deloitte), Michael Leichner (MPAcc Tax) and Patrick Chidsey (Career Center) in a demonstration of good vs. bad interviews. “The live examples of a good interview demonstrated side by side with a bad interview were highly effective and entertaining. It was a very memorable sight,” Vikki Kwan, VP of Administration, reflected. Co-chair Jason Koh learned you should ask questions after an interview. He learned the hard way last year when he interviewed with a small CPA firm.
Several attendees of the interview workshop had the opportunity to participate in mock interview sessions where they were video recorded and could later see themselves on tape. Business School advisor Patrick Chidsey conducted the interviews from 9AM to 3PM and was “very instrumental” in the success of the workshops, according to the iExpress co-chairs.
The resume workshop contained a resume consultation, “dress for success” presentation, Q&A from current MPAcc students, and tips on body language and business etiquette.
iExpress evolved from AZN Fusion, a nationally-awarded Best Practices event created last year by current BAP officers Lois King, Anna Cho, and Natalie Noborikawa. AZN Fusion was designed to increase chapter membership and professional success among students from Asian backgrounds, a minority in the accounting profession. This year the program changed its name and now provides tools for better communication for all members. iExpress also incorporates Ernst and Young’s Diversity Competition, a national BAP competition where chapters must define and incorporate what diversity means to the chapter. The stakes are high: national bragging rights and a $1,000 top prize.
Leading iExpress are co-chairs Jocelyn Dunn, Shu Ming Hu, Jason Koh, Lisa Kwok, and Heidi See. The team started planning under the close supervision of BAP advisor Deborah Medlar in October and spent over 60 hours writing a national proposal/report, emailing various professionals, and burning scores of CD’s for taped student mock interviews.
During Spring Quarter the iExpress team is planning another presentation or workshop, the details to be determined later. As a requirement for the E&Y Diversity Competition, they are also required to submit a final summary report on June 1st. Co-chair Heidi See comments:
We are planning to put more hours in the EY Diversity [Competition] than in the last three events because it is a big project which requires a lot of time commitment, such as planning and organizing an event, and writing a comprehensive report. Also we are planning to get more members involved in the next event, so we need to plan for it carefully to make sure everything will go smoothly.
The iExpress co-chairs would like to thank Deborah Medlar for her dedication to the workshops.

Spotlight Member: Anthony Mai

120 hours. That’s 5 straight days. Or more appropriately, it’s equivalent to 20 sessions of tax with Medlar, 20 meetings of Accounting 440 with Coach Hodge, and 60 hours of studying. And that’s how many service and professional hours Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) member Anthony Mai accumulated from fall to spring quarter last year. Anthony’s hours topped all other members. “I can attest that 120 isn’t that difficult—it is a doable achievement…that or I just have way too much free time,” Anthony reflects.
In his senior year at the University of Washington, Anthony is double-concentrating in Accounting and Information Systems and plans to graduate in June 2007. After graduation, he may enter the MPACC (audit) program in order to sit for the CPA examination. Anthony enjoys reading, playing piano, watching various anime shows, and playing video games.
Anthony earned many of his service hours while serving as BAP Photographer, a newly created position in 2005. Anthony explains: “Joshua [Chua, Former VP of Service] and Jayson [Wiser, Former President] were discussing some upcoming events back in autumn quarter in the [Balmer] Commons and I happen to be at one of the computers. As it was, I do enjoy taking photographs, candid and whatnot, so when Joshua asked if I could be the BAP photographer, I agreed.” Anthony attended and photographed two park cleanups, the KZOK Radiothon, one Medical Business Seminar, and several Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sessions. Throughout three quarters, Anthony snapped several hundred pictures with his Sony Cyber-Shot (4.1MP) camera. With the 128 MB memory card, Anthony can take up to 133 pictures; “Since I can't be too sure about quality, taking multiple photos affords me to take bad ones.”

This year Anthony has resumed his duties as photographer. He plans to take more non-candid photos and would like to see more member photos on the BAP website. Anthony is also co-chair of the Accounting Lab: “We need more Lead Tutors for Winter Quarter; Monday thru Thursday 1:30-3:30.”
