Ernst & Young's "Your World, Your Vision" Competition
Posted on Tuesday, 12/4/2008
This year, Ernst & Young is proud to announce Your World, Your Vision—a competition that challenges student teams to create a proposal for an initiative that has a significant impact on their community. The winning teams will receive up to $10,000 toward executing their proposal. Regardless of who wins, all students involved have the opportunity to work with each other, with Ernst & Young, and to achieve their vision of making a difference in their community.
How students define their community is up to them, but we see opportunities for community impact in three major areas: education, the environment and entrepreneurship. Students can focus their creativity on any one of these areas to strengthen their community in the way that is most important to them. Maybe it's instituting a corporate mentorship program for underserved schools, or maybe it's a scholarship honoring young entrepreneurs for their ingenuity. Or maybe it's something completely different. The more creative and sustainable the solution, the better.
How does it work? We're soliciting one entry per school, so student teams should contact their EY Advisor on campus to learn more. Â The UW EY Advisor is Sara Liveratti. Â Sara's email address is Sara.Liveratti@ey.com, or you can contact the PNW Lead Advisor, Jennifer de Leon, at jennifer.deleon@ey.com.
How can you help? You don't have to do anything to facilitate the competition other than encourage your students to realize their vision.
For more information, visit ey.com/us/Yourworldyourvision.

Updated on Friday, 11/14/2008
High School Mentors Needed for High Risk Freshmen
Did you know that only 58.9% of freshman enrolled in Seattle Public High Schools in 2000 graduated from high school in 2004? 85% of students mentored by Community for Youth graduate.
Beta Alpha Psi is looking for members to make the commitment to volunteer as mentors to freshman age students from both Rainier Beach and Cleveland High Schools. In addition to fulfilling the community service requirement, this is a great opportunity for learning the motivational skills necessary for managers in the accounting field, an opportunity for networking, and a way to make a difference in a young person's life.
There will be training for mentors and constant supervision and help from Community for Youth professionals.
Community for Youth, a 19 year old program, transforms high school students who are struggling - with school, with family, with their direction in life - into young adults who have confidence, determination and self-awareness. Supported by a community of adult mentors who are relentlessly committed to their success, teenagers learn to make thoughtful choices, fulfill their commitments, acknowledge their mistakes and account for their actions. By taking control of their lives, students realize they can achieve more than they ever dreamed possible. Please note that you do not have to be 21 to volunteer.

Virginia Tech Shootings
Posted on Tuesday, 4/17/2007
My name is David Allen and I am president of Beta Alpha Psi Gamma Lambda chapter here at Virginia Tech. I just wanted to let you know that there was an auditing class for juniors in that building at the same time that the shootings had happened but I think everyone is ok. Many of the students were in Beta Alpha Psi and Accounting society. I don’t think anyone was hurt but we haven’t heard from everyone. Luckily many of use were not involved in it directly but we all have fiends who were involved. If you could let the chapters know that we appreciate all thoughts and prayers that they can give us.
Thank you for your support,
David Allen

Apply to MPAcc Program
Posted on Thursday, 3/29/2007
Thinking NOW About Attending the MPAcc (Taxation or Auditing)Program? It's not too late to apply!
Sometimes a student takes Auditing or Taxation so late in their program and then they realize that a One Year Masters in either Auditing or Taxation makes a lot of sense.
It isn't too late to apply. If you are a late decision-maker come and see Bill Resler (tax) or Jim Gillick (audit & assurance) to see about a delayed application.
A Masters truly jump starts your career and advances you through the ranks much more quickly.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Posted on Sunday, 2/11/2007
Corporate Social Responsibility is a growing concern for the corporate world. Public corporations are paying more attention to this field of reporting as many companies undergo major PR disasters arising from ignoring concerns about public welfare. Companies use these reports to show the public and their shareholders that they have business strategies that protect the interests of consumers, the environment, and shareholders while still making profit. These reports are still new to the public, arising only recently following such corporate disasters as Enron and Worldcom that gave rise to Sarbanes-Oxley.
Our meeting will focus on discussing why social responsibility is an important and the effects that these reports are having on corporate strategy as well as corporate success.

- Margaret Yung, FVP/National Manager, Community Investments Community & External Affairs Division, from Washington Mutual
- Elizabeth Borelli, Corporate Public Relations, from Washington Mutual
